General Position Description

This full time, seasonal position, works as part of a team of 3-4 co-workers to properly paint roadway lines and markings.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • 1. Clean and prepare pavement for paint, epoxy, tape or thermoplastic as directed
  • 2. Layout and install pavement markings on roadways according to specifications and other various requirements
  • 3. Calculate field measurements using engineered plans
  • 4. Accurately track and record quantities of pavement markings on each project
  • 5. Operate various equipment to install pavement markings, including airless paint machines, paint trucks, epoxy trucks, propane torches, tape applicators and various hand tools
  • 6. Follow all safety procedures, as well as, all Company policies as directed
  • 7. Lift, carry, load, and unload construction items including pavement marking supplies, safety cones, paint, stencils, etc.
  • 8. Operate equipment and/or machinery as directed in a safe and efficient manner
  • 9. Perform basic equipment repairs and maintenance
  • 10. Perform traffic control. Includes flagging, short-term lane closures, and slow-moving mobile lane closures
  • 11. Drive, operate and maintain paint/epoxy equipment for application of pavement markings on highways, roadways, parking areas, trails and airports.
  • 12. Drive, operate and maintain grinding/grooving equipment to remove existing pavement markings and/or create recesses for pavement markings.
  • 13. Check performance of the different components of pavement marking equipment including auxiliary engines, pumps, heaters, air compressors, hydraulic systems, paint/epoxy/air/glycol/hydraulic lines, paint/epoxy guns, reflective bead guns and electronic switch boxes, tape applicators, propane torches; troubleshoot equipment failures and report unresolved problems to appropriate staff.
  • 14. Utilize pointer bar, cameras and/or laser to guide vehicle or machinery along existing lines or new layout marks for the purpose of painting center, lane, edge and gore lines.
  • 15. Read, interpret and follow blueprints, drawings and specifications as required to layout unmarked pavement markings.
  • 16. Operate and maintain an airless walk behind/powered paint striping machine to apply various lines and pavement markings.
  • 17. Accurately track and record quantities of pavement markings on each project.
  • 18. Operates and assists in the operation of vehicles, trailers and equipment; drive company vehicles to/from job site(s) and effective use of maps/GPS (Job Description—Driver - Long Line Operator, Continued) (Revised 3/30/07)
  • 19. Perform manual labor, including the use of stencils, torches, hand tools and operate various equipment; drive support trucks on a daily basis; load and unload equipment, supplies and materials.
  • 20. Perform and document daily equipment and vehicle inspections as required.
  • 21. Willing to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or foreman with other duties as required or as deemed necessary by Company management

Essential Physical Qualifications:

  • 1. Ability to remain drug free and submit to pre-employment and random drug screens
  • 2. Physical demands of this job include sitting, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, lifting minimum of 50 pounds frequently to an occasionally 100 pounds, carrying, pushing, pulling, dexterity of hands and fingers, seeing, hearing, and talking.
  • 3. Fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines and equipment with steering wheels, joysticks, buttons, knobs, handles, toggle and rocker switches.
  • 4. Properly wear personal protective equipment as directed and required
  • 5. Frequent exposure to paint, epoxy, paint fumes, solvents, chemical fumes and other environmental substances.
  • 6. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination, color and depth perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties
  • 7. Environmental exposure to noise, including those associated with highways, construction sites and equipment, airports.
  • 8. Ability to perform assigned duties in all types of weather and temperature extremes
  • 9. Ability to work long hours, [up to 13 hours per day], six days a week during peak season

  • 1. Willing to work days, nights, weekends, and travel overnight
  • 2. Ability to work diligently while under time restraints
  • 3. Requires the ability to handle multiple tasks to fulfill job requirements
  • 4. Interact with co-workers, contractors and general public in a positive and professional manager
  • 5. Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, understanding oral and written instructions, and communicating with customers, inspectors, employees, contractors, and the public in English.

  • 9. Must obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake and Tanker endorsement within six months of employment start date and an acceptable driving record
  • 10. Must obtain ATSSA Flagging Certification or Traffic Control Technician Certification
  • 11. Acceptable background check for access to controlled or sensitive areas.

Education & Experience:

  • 1. High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 2. Previous line marking in long line applications is desirable
